Change your name, hours, phone or location on Google
Wrong hours or an old phone number on Google lose customers every day, and you can fix them yourself in a few minutes. This is how, what each change needs, and why some edits wait for Google, from Google's own help pages.
How to edit
- Sign in with the account that owns the listing. Changes only work from the Google account linked to your Business Profile.
- Edit it on Google Search. Search for your business, select Edit profile, make the change and select Save.
- Or in the Google Maps app. Tap Business at the bottom right, then Edit profile, make the change and tap Save.
What each change needs
- Name: exactly as it is on your signboard. If you change the name after the listing is verified, Google may ask you to verify it again.
- Address and pin: the full, accurate address. If you move to a new address after verification, you must verify again. If customers don't come to you, hide the address and set a service area instead.
- Service area: the cities or areas you serve, as exact as you can.
- Hours: set your normal hours once. For Ramzan, Eid and holidays, add special hours instead of changing the normal ones. If delivery or a kitchen keeps different hours, add those as more hours.
- Phone: one main number and up to two more, mobile or landline.
- Category: the one that best describes what you do comes first, and you can add up to nine more. Never use categories as keywords.
- Website: the full address, starting with https://.
"Pending" or "Not approved"?
Google checks every edit before it shows. That usually takes 10 minutes, and sometimes up to 30 days. Pending means it is still being checked. Not approved means Google couldn't confirm it; you may be able to appeal a rejected edit. Google can also change your listing itself when people report something wrong; you then get a notification, and an alert under Edit profile.
Listing not showing on Google Maps?
- It has to be verified to show on Search and Maps, Google says. See verification, step by step.
- It may be suspended. See what to do.
- Where it ranks: Google says local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. A complete listing with the right category, real photos, correct hours and honest reviews helps with the first and the last. Nobody can change the distance.
Two listings for the same business?
Google allows one listing per business, and one it treats as a duplicate doesn't show on Search or Maps.
- You made a second one by mistake: remove it from your account. Everything on it and everyone managing it goes too, so remove the right one.
- Two listings on Maps for one business: ask Google to merge them by suggesting an edit on Google Maps. They must have the same details; the reviews are combined, but replies to reviews may be lost.
- You moved: don't make a new listing. Change the address on the one you have, then verify it again.
What not to do
- Don't make a second listing to get round a wrong one. Fix the one you have.
- Don't change the name or address unless they really changed: either can mean verifying again.
- Don't add keywords to the name or the categories.
Want it kept right for you? The Google listing service is from Rs 3,000, and hours, prices and photos stay current with the monthly care.
Google's own help pages: edit your Business Profile, what happens to your edits, local ranking, duplicate profiles.
