Google listing suspended? What to do, step by step.

Google suspends a Business Profile when it thinks the listing breaks its rules. Customers may stop finding you on Maps, and you cannot manage the listing until it is reinstated. Most suspensions can be appealed with the right documents. A new listing or a rushed appeal usually makes it worse.

Why listings get suspended

The appeals tool shows the reason and links to the rule that was broken, so start there. Google's own guidelines name the usual causes:

• Extra words in the name. "Best Biryani Lahore" instead of the name on your board.
• An address you do not work from. A rented mailing address or virtual office, or a PO box, cannot have a listing.
• A home address that should be hidden. A business that goes to its customers (a caterer, a decorator, an electrician) hides its address and sets a service area instead.
• More than one listing for the same business.
• Keywords or links written into the address lines.
• Paid or fake reviews.

The appeal, step by step

Before you appeal, make sure the listing follows Google's guidelines, as Google itself asks. Then use Google's Business Profile appeals tool:

1. Have your documents ready first. The list is below. Once the evidence form is open, you have 60 minutes to submit it, or it is not attached.
2. Open the appeals tool. Sign in with the Google account that owns the listing.
3. Choose the listing. The tool shows the restriction, the reason and a link to the rule.
4. Select Submit Appeal. Then select Add evidence and upload your documents.
5. Wait for Google's email. Google says a decision can take up to five working days. Do not send a second appeal for the same thing before it answers.
6. If it is refused, ask for one more review. You can add evidence you did not send the first time.

If Google has restricted your whole Google account, not just the listing, that is appealed first, from the "My accounts" page, and then the listing.

Documents that help

Google lists an official business registration, a business licence, tax certificates, and utility bills for the business: electricity, phone, water, internet. In Pakistan that can be your registration certificate, your FBR NTN certificate, a trade licence, or an electricity or PTCL bill for the shop. The name and address on every document must match the listing.

What never to do

• Do not make a new listing while the appeal is being reviewed. Google says this in so many words.
• Do not send appeal after appeal for the same thing.
• Do not pay anyone who promises to "unsuspend" it. Only Google decides, through the same tool you can use yourself.
