Foodpanda commission vs your own ordering page: what each order really costs.
Delivery apps bring you customers who have never heard of you, and that is worth paying for. But once a customer knows your food, paying commission on every repeat order is a different decision. Here is the arithmetic, and a practical way to use both.
What the commission is
Restaurants in Pakistan commonly report paying Foodpanda around 25% to 35% of each order, depending on the plan and how prominently they are shown, and some report payment fees on top. The only number that counts is the one in your own agreement, so check the percentage on your statement.
What that adds up to
- One Rs 2,000 order at 30%: Rs 600 goes to the app.
- 100 such orders in a month: Rs 60,000.
- 300 orders in a month: Rs 180,000.
What the app still does well
- People who have never heard of you find you there.
- In many areas it brings the rider as well.
- Customers who want to pay online can.
So for most restaurants the answer is not to leave the app. It is to stop paying commission on customers who already know you.
Where your own ordering page wins
- Repeat customers. Someone who has ordered three times does not need the app to find you. Give them your menu link and your WhatsApp number.
- People who find you on Google Maps. Your listing's website and order buttons can lead to your own menu instead of the app.
- Big orders: office lunches, family dinners, dawats. Those customers want to talk to you anyway.
Moving repeat orders over, without annoying anyone
- Put your WhatsApp number and menu link on the bag, the box and the bill.
- Make your own menu at least as easy as the app: every dish with its price, and one button that opens WhatsApp with the order already written.
- Say where you deliver, what delivery costs, and your hours.
- Answer fast. An order that waits twenty minutes for a reply goes back to the app.
- Read your agreement first if you plan to charge less on your own page than on the app.
How the WhatsApp side works in practice is in taking orders on WhatsApp.
The numbers for your own page
A Sitey restaurant website is from Rs 10,000 to build and from Rs 4,000 a month, hosting and menu changes included, with no commission on any order. At Rs 600 commission an order, Rs 4,000 a month is about seven orders. Jik Jik Chinese kept Foodpanda for delivery and added its own 104-dish menu that takes orders on WhatsApp. More on the restaurant website page.
