Nayab Dry Fruits in Karkhano Market, Peshawar is famous for a nut that, the shop says, does not break by hand, by teeth, by a stone or under a truck. A fist hits the chabi nut on a road, then a set of teeth bites it, then a stone falls on it and the stone breaks. Each time the page says: not by hand, not by teeth, not by a stone.
A painted Pakistani truck rolls over the nut on real wheels. Not even under a truck. Then a small steel key turns in the slot, the shell opens, and the whole shop pours out: almonds, cashews, pistachios, dates, raisins. “The counter is open.”
